Philip Hind brings a strong clinical foundation, a clear sense of purpose, and a deep commitment to person-centred care to his role as Service Manager at Glen Garth House and Tenby House. A Registered Mental Health Nurse, he combines professional expertise with a compassionate, calm leadership style that supports both the people who live in the services and the teams who work there.
Philip’s interest in nursing began early. “Growing up, I always wanted to be a nurse,” he reflects. His career direction crystallised while working in a dementia-specialist nursing home, where he discovered mental health nursing and was encouraged by senior colleagues to pursue this path. This experience shaped the values that underpin his leadership today.
“Nursing taught me that everyone is vulnerable to fluctuations in their health and well-being. It reminds me daily of the importance of empathy and respect in leadership.”
Clinical Expertise Shaping Compassionate Leadership
Since joining Northern Healthcare, Philip has been struck by the commitment of the team.
“The teams at Glen Garth and Tenby House are a kind, caring group of professionals who are dedicated to supporting all those within the service.”
The people supported at the service have also played a key role in his positive start.
“They’ve been very welcoming and have helped me understand what they want from the service and from me as a manager. We’ve worked collaboratively to learn and grow together.”
Philip’s nursing background is central to how he leads. He has a strong ability to identify early changes in mental health presentation, meaning risks are recognised quickly, and support is responsive.
“My experience helps me recognise changes to someone’s baseline and understand when there’s a deterioration. That means we can act early and ensure they get the support they need.”
He also places great importance on therapeutic relationships.
“The most effective way to support someone who finds engagement difficult is to build trust, empathy and mutual respect.”
In his first few months, he has been particularly impressed by the team’s skill and professionalism.
“I’ve seen staff manage very challenging situations while remaining compassionate and maintaining dignity and respect. They consistently use therapeutic strategies that are person-centred and in line with evidence-based best practice.”
Making a Meaningful Difference
Philip is motivated by the real impact the service has on people’s lives. He shared a recent example of someone who struggled to return to voluntary work after a long period of ill-health.
“His mobility had been affected, his recovery was slow, and he became socially isolated, which significantly impacted his mental health. We knew how important that role was to him; it gave him purpose.”
Working together over time, the team supported him to develop coping strategies and gradually rebuild confidence.
“With that support, he was able to return to his role, and he was met with a warm welcome by his colleagues. It was a real moment of pride for him.”
This focus on empowerment and dignity is central to Philip’s motivation. As he explains, “For me, the Health and Social Care sector is special because it’s centred on providing person-centred, holistic support. It enables people to live their best lives within their own homes and communities. That sense of empowerment and dignity is something I feel privileged to be part of, and it’s what motivates me to keep raising standards in care delivery.”
This belief sits at the heart of how he supports individuals to rebuild independence, confidence and connection.
Strengthening Teams, Partnerships and Future Quality
Philip is committed to strong collaborative working. He has already begun building relationships with clinical teams, commissioners, families and wider support networks.
“We’ve shared our successes and acknowledged where we want to keep developing, so we’re working towards shared goals. Collaboration is essential to ensure continuity of care.”
Plans include regular contact with local community mental health teams, attending multi-agency meetings, and hosting drop-in days for family and friends.
Supporting staff development is also a priority. Philip draws on his nursing and leadership experience to guide the team.
“Reflection is an important part of how we learn. We hold regular supervisions to discuss challenges and identify where we can strengthen knowledge and skills. I’m always keen to share what I’ve learned throughout my nursing career.”
Looking ahead, Philip is focused on maintaining strong, consistent care and helping his team reach their full potential.
“We want to celebrate our achievements while setting new goals for the future. Our aim is to achieve excellence in everything we do.”
Outside of work, Philip enjoys spending time with his family, walking in the Lake District and photographing wildlife. He draws inspiration from people who show resilience and determination.
“People who persevere and continue to grow really inspire me. I want to create an environment where both my team and the people we support can do exactly that.”
