From Support Worker to Service Manager: Joseph Hartley’s Journey at Mary Seacole House
In the next chapter of our Service Manager series, we’re shining a spotlight on Joseph Hartley, Acting Service Manager at Mary Seacole House. With over a decade of experience in the healthcare sector and a passion for empowering others, Joseph brings a wealth of knowledge, dedication, and heart to his role. His journey with Northern Healthcare is a testament to the opportunity and support that define our organisation.
From starting as a Support Worker to now leading a team, Joseph shares what inspired his path, how he supports his colleagues, and why every small success matters. His story is one of resilience, leadership, and the power of person-centred care.
What led you to join Northern Healthcare?
“I have worked in the healthcare sector for over 10 years, predominantly in Learning Disability services and community support. While I enjoyed all of my previous roles, I found I was maintaining a situation rather than supporting people to become more independent. Northern Healthcare stood out to me for several reasons, one of them being the pathways and support model. I have always wanted to see the people I support move on and thrive individually; that is the whole point of Northern Healthcare.”
What inspired you to become a Service Manager?
“I come from a family of healthcare workers and managers, so growing up I was exposed to all aspects of the industry. I have always understood the pressures of the role, but I’m not afraid to say I lacked some confidence in the past. With the support I have received from my colleagues at NHC, I felt invested in and steadily worked my way through the ranks to reach my full potential. Learning something new each day, I am here not only for the people we support but for the staff too. I wanted the opportunity to make positive changes and exercise my leadership skills.”
What do you love most about working here?
“The feeling of a small company with the infrastructure of a large corporation. The wealth of knowledge within the company is astounding. I feel lucky to work with people who share the same values as I do, all with a common goal in mind. Every day brings a new challenge and another opportunity to learn. As a relatively small company, there is so much growth and potential for all who are fortunate enough to be involved.”
How do you support your team to thrive?
“By listening and being part of the team. I value each staff member within the organisation, but especially my team at Mary Seacole House, I am lucky to know such caring, supportive, and inspiring individuals. For me, I want my team to know their input is valid and essential. Yes, I lead the team, but the team also leads me. It’s a collaborative effort, all with the same goal in mind. I have worked my way up the ranks within NHC and want the opportunities I’ve been given to be accessible for all. Whether that’s offering extra training or explaining some of the management processes I must follow, and let’s not forget, saying thank you each and every day goes a long way. Thank you Mary Seacole House, I am so PROUD of you all!”
What makes Northern Healthcare’s approach to mental health support stand out?
“The focus on the people and not being averse to change. I have seen massive growth within the organisation in the last three years, NHC is proactive, not reactive. I think our pathways make us stand out as a provider; they enable us to tailor our delivery to each individual and be completely person-centred. It’s great to see people move on to more independent pastures with the skills to succeed.”
Is there a moment or a success story that’s stuck with you?
“It’s hard to pinpoint one moment, as there are things every day that make me feel like the work we all do is of great value. However, within the organisation, I supported someone who had struggled with self-image and had an extensive history of hospital admissions and risky behaviour. Through the support provided, this individual was able to maintain a tenancy, stay out of hospital, and reignite old hobbies and positive lifestyle choices, like swimming for example. In my experience, it’s not the massive “wins” that stick with me; it’s the everyday positive steps.”
What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying for a Service Manager role?
“Think big and make a difference. Now is an exciting time to join Northern Healthcare. Being a relatively small organisation yet steadily growing, opportunities are abundant and stimulating. After working for much larger organisations, I can safely say that Northern Healthcare is by far the best place I have ever worked. The opportunities and continued professional development as a Service Manager are plentiful, with a vast wealth of knowledge to tap into from peers and professionals alike.”
How have you grown, personally and professionally, since joining?
“Since joining NHC three and a half years ago, my growth has been both significant and deeply rewarding. I began my journey as a Support Worker and have since progressed to the role of Service Manager, which has been a testament to the opportunities and support NHC provides.
Professionally, I’ve developed strong leadership skills, a deeper understanding of service delivery, and the ability to adapt to different roles and regions. Having worked across all three regions and undertaken secondments in various positions, I’ve gained a well-rounded perspective and broadened my expertise in the sector.
Personally, relocating from Yorkshire to Manchester for this role was a big step, but it’s helped me grow in confidence, independence, and resilience. I’ve embraced new challenges and environments, and each step has pushed me outside my comfort zone in the best possible way. Throughout my time with NHC, I’ve always felt supported and valued, which has played a key role in my development and motivation to keep growing.
I will always be grateful for the opportunities NHC has given me.”
