A Passion For Quality: Stephen Speed.
In this interview, we speak with Stephen, Registered Mental Health Nurse who joined the Northern Healthcare team as a Quality and Improvement Facilitator. With over a decade of experience and a passion for enhancing quality in healthcare, Stephen shares his journey in the sector and his dedication to supporting colleagues in providing the best possible care.
What attracted you to Northern Healthcare?
“Since becoming a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) over ten years ago, I have always been interested in improving quality, completing audits on the ward, disseminating actions and chasing them up.
I had a change in position as the ward unfortunately closed and I was keen to search for a position in quality. I had already worked with Jo Willis previously and I completed my nurse training with Sophie Thomas. When I discovered there was a job at NHC for Quality and Improvement Facilitator I immediately knew it was something I wanted to explore!”
What makes the Health and Social Care sector so special?
“Helping others and improving their quality of lives helping them to live as independently as possible despite their conditions.”
What do you hope to bring to your role?
“I hope to provide support and improve quality to the sites in my region and provide clinical advice to help staff manage different presentations of Prader-Willi Syndrome due to my experience as an inpatient RMN.”
What did you want to be growing up?
“I think as with anyone, I had several wishes ranging from footballer to professional skateboarder and later wanting to work with animals.”
What was your first paying job?
“My first paid job was in my Dad’s community pharmacy working on the counter! After that it was a healthcare assistant in a private sector mental health rehabilitation - this is where my love for working in the mental health sector began.”
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
“I love spending time with my family. I am an avid Strongman fan and enjoy training as a Strongman (and have competed once but want to do this again!). I like going to music concerts and spending time outdoors in nature. I used to enjoy skateboarding and I am going to try and get back into this.”
What/who inspires you?
“My family for their work ethic, love and support, my son for being the best, despite some health struggles in early life. Well-known people I have met, including Eddie Hall (ex-professional Strongman) I am inspired by him for his willingness to not give up during tough times and continue until his goals are achieved.”
Stephen's commitment to quality is evident in every aspect of his work. His drive and attention to detail are inspiring. Thank you Stephen for sharing your passion for quality with our team, we are lucky to have you onboard!
